Earth Hour

Hey! I missed it!

Last saturday night at 8ish or 9ish was "earth hour." That was where everyone (in the world) was supposed to turn off all their electricity as a symbolic token of their concern for global warming (or something). It was symbolism, only symbolism. It wasn't really supposed to help save the earth or any natural resources or save us from global warming or save the [insert your favorite endangered species]. It was supposed to "raise awareness." It was an environmental publicity stunt.

Did you turn off your electicity?

I don't even remember what I was doing Saturday night.

As a global-environmental-standing-in-a-circle-holding-hands-and-singing-in-the-dark event, I think it was a failure. Nobody around here gave it the slightest attention. Probably because no one knew about it. Some publicity stunt. Someone in Tennessee drove by Al Gore's mansion during earth hour and found the outdoor floodlights illuminating his trees, and coming from inside the house, the blue flicker of TVs or computer monitors. "Al Gore Snubs Earth Hour," the headline read. Even the guru of global warming apparently thought it a silly event. LOL

Actually, I wish they would hold a mandatory earth hour every month at the time of the new moon (no moonlight), (and also somehow make the skies devoid of clouds that night) so that I could have no light pollution and have perfect skies for some great stargazing in my own front yard! Just think what a great star party we could have!!

I remembered. I turned on every light in the house, pulled both cars into the driveway and left them running for an hour, added the lawn mower, the chipper/shredder, and for good measure stood in the front yard, howling at the moon with one armed tied behind me. The news media drove by my house as well. The next morning headlines read: "Two-headed alien tries to destroy the planet single-handedly." I received an email from the government at noon indicating that I have been fired as the CEO of the Galaxy. It seems that the constellation Orion took some of the bailout money.

I was on my couch Saturday night trying really hard not to throw up, so that was my contribution to the planet. One less pile of vomit corroding the earth's crust....

Audrey was in bed, not polluting the earth. Ben, Gabe and I were collectively watching TV and had 3 laptops running at the same time. I'm sure we had lights on because I refuse to use the computer under only it's own light.. bad for the eyes you know.
