Adventure #1 for 2010

I posted a blog a long time ago (in 2008?) about Larry Miller's son Greg who promised his children 100 ADVENTURES during the year. Remember that? I said I thought it was a great idea, so we embarked on our first adventure. As I recall it was a play at the Covey Center in Provo. Remember that???? --And remember the eye-guy who left a comment on my blog????? "YIKES"!!!!!!! LOL

In total during this past year, I think we logged less than half a dozen adventures for the entire year. (Sigh) Oh, well. It's now a NEW YEAR!

Here's a nearby quick adventure for anyone who might be interested:

The Woodbury Art Museum is at the University Mall, on the 2nd floor between Nordstroms and The Gap. It's open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and it's free.

The above photo is of a painting in their permanent exhibit. This picture is part of the Fairy Tales collection and depicts a scene from Sleeping Beauty. Other art in the collection includes pictures from Lord of the Rings and Phantom of the Opera. (I think these qualify as kid-friendly art.)

Also currently on exhibit are several Sorensen Wax Dolls. There are a dozen different "Father Christmas" dolls on display until mid-January. These dolls are carved wax and are ornately clothed. Below is a photo of "Father Frost," one of the wax dolls.

Then, afterwards there might be a stop at the ice cream place?! (Two adventures for the price of one....)

One Down, Ninety-nine Adventures to Go

Tonight we went on the first of our 100 adventures: “Wedlocked,” a “musical comedy” by Marvin Payne and Steven Kapp Perry. If you will recall, I predicted that this production would probably be “unapologetically schlocky” and that I would no doubt leave the theater at the end rolling my eyes and shaking my head.

Well, prior to going to the performance this evening, I went back to look at my blog on the 100 Adventures, and discovered that one additional comment was posted two days ago. Someone named “poppamonkey” said:

“Wedlocked” isn’t all that schlocky. I’ve heard really good things about it, and I liked it as well. ~D.L. Walker (the bald guy)”

Who is D.L.Walker? I wondered. By the way, poppamonkey’s picture was a spooky close-up of his left blue eye with a heart-shaped pupil. (*Jibblies!*)

When we got to the theater and were reading the program, we discovered who D.L. Walker is: HE’S THE MALE STAR OF “WEDLOCKED” ! (There are only two actors in the production, one male, one female.) So, remembering his comment on my blog, made me laugh: What a funny joke on me! After the performance was over, I introduced myself (as “Trillium”) and referred to my blog and his comment. He seemed to recall it. I assured him the play was not “schlocky” after all.

Now, THAT was a fun “adventure”! Getting a comment in my blog from the star of the show was certainly an unexpected “event”! And then having a cute exchange about it after the show— I will probably remember that long after I have forgotten the production. But, I don’t know—the story did have some rather compelling scenes that may stick with me . . . . (heheheheh . . .)

100 Adventures

A few weeks ago, when Larry Miller was released from his two-month hospital ordeal, he and his wife and son held a news conference at the Energy Solutions Arena in SLC. A number of topics were discussed including ordering priorities so that family actually comes first in practice and not just in lip-service. Larry’s near-death experiences made him realize that he had spent entirely too much of his life working, and too little time engaged in enriching family experiences. Larry’s son shared a promise that he had made to his own son to have 100 “adventures” together with him during this year. This idea of “adventures” caught my attention and fired my imagination.

“What a great idea!” I thought. “My Knight in Rusting Armor [or, rather, my Rusting Knight] and I should do that!” Then, with some quick math I realized that 100 adventures in a year meant about two adventures per week. Considering our ages and waning energy levels two adventures per week seemed awfully over-optimistic. So, I whittled it down to a more reasonable one per week, or about fifty adventures. I got out a pad of paper and a pen, intending to start writing down potential adventures. I then experienced an immediate and overwhelming need for a nap [see napping photo below].

After the nap, I thought maybe 24 adventures a year would be a more manageable number. . . . Or maybe just 12. . . . Or . . . . At the rate I was going, in no time I would have the list whittled down to maybe one adventure per year. With the emphasis on the maybe. I put the "list" aside to think about later.

So, now it is one month later. Time flies even when you aren't having fun. And I am happy to report that today I forced myself to schedule our first adventure for next Thursday, September 11. And knowing how easily I forget or become too tired to do something that sounded fun last week, but now sounds odious, I selected an adventure that required payment of money. Now that it is paid for, we will surely go.

This particular adventure is a theatre production written by Marvin Payne and Steven Kapp Perry, called “Wedlocked.” It is being performed in Provo. We got tickets for $7 each. The show will undoubtedly be unapologetically schlocky and I will come away rolling my eyes and shaking my head. So, before next Thursday, I will have to schedule the next adventure so that I don’t become disgusted and throw in the towel on having further adventures.

13. Camp Floyd Day Sept 27 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

As I was picturing some of the above "adventures," I thought they’d definitely be more fun with extended family. If you can think of any adventures to add to my list please share. And if you can think of adventures that you might like to DO with extended family, please share those too. Incidentally, Jen and Andy and kids did adventure number 3 (above) last Saturday morning. The Knight and I were not feeling adventurous enough to go with them, but after they reported that the trail wasn’t difficult, I am now looking forward to doing it too. Maybe this Saturday . . . .
